Often, the use of recruitment companies is to cut down the amount of interviews you have. Never sit across from them, but try to sit to the side or use a round table. By doing this the whole scenario is much more informal and can make the person happier and more comfortable. Don’t cross your arms, and sit relaxed in your chair to show that you are welcoming and friendly.


Try to keep the room light natural, try to keep away from florescent lights as they are known for increasing tension. Maybe even try doing the interview outside and always remain calm and use open-ended, simple questions.

The more comfortable and relaxed that the candidate is then the more likely you are to see a side of him, or her, that you would be likely to see in the office on a daily basis. It often leads to a better conversation, and is something used regularly with younger candidates.

Intimidating

Where some employers like to make potential employees feel relaxed, others prefer to create an intimidating atmosphere to see how the candidate performs under pressure. To do this, you should start by sitting at the opposite end of a big table, or across a desk. Get florescent lighting on and make sure you look bigger in your chair than the potential employee at the other end.

You need to seem powerful and rigid to make sure that the person knows you are serious. Don’t be wasting time with small talk, and begin immediately with uncomfortable and difficult questions. Pick holes in a CV, their attire or whatever and try not to change expression whilst the answers are given.


Make sure that you challenge these answers to see if they crumble or are able to think on their feet. This is common for employers who are looking for candidates that are good under pressure, likely to have stress and need good communication skills – even in a hostile environment.
